Where Does Your Food Come From?

NASHVILLE, TN -- Singer-songwriter Adrienne Young has a question: do you know where your food comes from? Truth be told, precious few of us can say yes.

In an effort to communicate the vital importance of buying locally grown food, this critically acclaimed artist has joined forces with FoodRoutes Network, a national nonprofit organization created to provide interested communities with the information and resources needed to rebuild their local food system.

Young's Grammy nominated album, Plow to the End of the Row, illustrates her deep commitment to the land and the farmers who work it. She shares her strong convictions with FoodRoutes' Program Manager, Joani Walsh, who calls this unique partnership "a perfect vehicle for getting the word out far and wide about the critical impact that buying fresh food direct from local farmers can have on our communities."

FoodRoutes Network is based in a small, central Pennsylvania farming town and was established to reintroduce Americans to their food, the seeds it grows from, the farmers who produce it, and the routes that carry it from the field to the table. Nationwide, FoodRoutes is partnering with community groups and providing them communications tools and information resources to help launch local food campaigns.

Throughout the country, "Buy Fresh, Buy Local" campaigns are connecting the public with farmers through farmers markets, Community Supported Agriculture projects, as well as restaurants, caterers, and other market outlets offering locally grown food.

Both Young and FoodRoutes are reminding the public about the benefits of buying local food and helping them locate farm fresh products grown in their region. "The support of family farms positively affects our world on so many levels," Young says. "For starters, it strengthens local economies while fostering closer-knit communities. It also safeguards our family farms while simultaneously protecting the public by ensuring an awareness of whether harmful chemicals or environmentally destructive practices are being used to produce our food."

Young, who includes a packet of seeds in every CD, is touring the country with her band Little Sadie. Young and her band are using their concerts and interviews as opportunities to share ideas with people about the food they eat and to connect with grassroots partners at each stop.

Meanwhile, critics across the country are singing Young's praises:
"The Americana Music find of the year! Four Stars!" wrote Bob Strauss of The Los Angeles Daily News. Peter Cooper of the Tennessean agrees, observing that the album is "a beguilingly innocent marriage of old-time and roots pop that makes one of the most promising debuts on the local scene." And John Schoenberger of R&R wrote "Adrienne Young has a creative knack for blending the traditional with the global and the tried-and-true with the experimental. She expresses this respect for the past and a desire to explore both musically and lyrically on Plow To The End Of The Row."
